Tis the season of giving and what better way to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday than to give back to the community. Our efforts have been community-focused since Local Motors inception in 2007. We started collaborating with our online community to harness ideas and feedback on how we could better serve communities with new methods and modes of transportation. Today we are still building and executing with the community in mind, but this time it is to feed families for the holidays.

Over 140 guests joined us for our 3rd Annual Car Show and Food Drive in Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center parking lot in National Harbor, MD on Sunday, November 18. Drivers and spectators came from near and far to attend the event. An entry fee was not required to participate, but we asked everyone to bring canned goods and/or nonperishable foods to donate. All donations were given to Oxon Hill Food Pantry, a local non-profit organization in Prince George’s County that dedicates its resources to supporting the local community.

Trunk Stuffed With Stuffing
“That’s one stuffed Tesla!” A Tesla arrived, with the trunk full of stuffing to donate.

The event kicked off at 12 pm with several cars pulling up to grab the perfect spot to park and showcase their vehicle. Upon arrival, guests who donated food were given a raffle ticket to enter a raffle filled with prizes sponsored by our neighboring businesses in National Harbor.  This year we upped the ante and started assigning vehicles an auto ID to help identify their vehicle for the voting process that would ensue. Spectators used the auto ID numbers to vote for the “Most Popular Vehicle” in the electric car class and the “Best in Show” vehicle. In addition, a kid’s activity station was available for children to enjoy fun DIY turkey craft activities.

Several different types of vehicles arrived to strut their stuff, pun intended. Some pretty cool classics were showcased, including a Delorean and AC Cobra (Shelby Cobra)

Yup, we’re taking you back to the future with this Delorean.

Quite a few electric, exotic, and muscle cars were on the scene as well.

Electric Vehicles
Surely we could not host a car show without having electric vehicles on display.
Local Motors Rally Fighter
Of course a Local Motors Rally Fighter had to get in on the action.

And the winners are…

Tesla Model S
“Most Popular Vehicle” in the electric car class – Tesla Model S
Ferrari 458
“Best in Show” vehicle – Ferrari 458

More than 50 vehicles were showcased and over $1,000 worth of food donations was collected. Car show and food drive attendees outdid themselves! Because of them, Oxon Hill Food Pantry was able to restock their pantry to feed families for the holidays.

Charitable-focused events such as this thrive from the in-kind support of other businesses. Our event sponsors donated experiences, products and gift cards and we are honored to have worked with them. A huge thank you to Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, Carbelles, Westin National Harbor, Sunoco, Bobby McKeys, Tervis, Brake Dust, Alex and Ani, Georgetown Olive Oil, Mason’s Lobster Roll, Mommy Sees You, The Walrus Oyster & Ale House, T-Mobile, DGS Create, AVS Metro, and Starbucks.
